Abstract

1504528 Analogue-to-digital conversion PLESSEY CO Ltd 20 May 1975 [11 June 1974] 25881/74 Heading H3H In analogue-to-digital conversion, coarse and fine converters ADC1, ADC2 each produce a digital byte including a sign bit, the bytes being added (or subtracted) in digital adder DA. As shown, ADC1 produces a sign bit and 5 binary weighted amplitude bits, the difference between the output of digital-to-analogue converter DAC and the input analogue IS being amplified by 2<SP>5</SP> before passing to ADC2. Each A-to-D converter comprises a cascade of one-bit stages, producing a binary Gray code, converted to natural binary at G/BC1 and G/BC2. Each stage, Fig. 2, comprises an inverting amplifier A2 of unity gain a comparator CA1 giving the binary output of the stage at DO, and a full-wave rectifier controlled by the output of the comparator, the diodes being forward biased to achieve high linearity and avoid open circuit condition at zero input which would give rise to a spurious output. Relative values of the resistors are given.
