Abstract

1503250 Moulding heat exchanger B & K TOOLING Ltd 22 Dec 1976 53469/76 Addition to 1464386 Heading B5 [Also in Division F4] A method of manufacturing a heat exchanger for a solar panel comprises adding a resin to a metallic powder at ambient temperature to form a composite material wherein the metallic powder comprises 65-95% by weight of the mixture, applying the whole of the composite material to a mould whose temperature is ambient, compacting the material on the mould, allowing the material to harden sufficiently at ambient temperature to permit removal of the mould from the pattern and post-curing at a temperature above ambient. The material may be compacted by tamping or vibrating. The resin may be an epoxy or a polyester. The metallic power may comprise aluminium, iron, gold, silver, copper, steel or mixtures thereof and may have a particle size of 100-300 mesh. More than one layer of the material may be applied to the pattern, each layer having metallic powder of different particle size. Fluid channels may be incorporated between the layers by using copper tubing or wax or alloy destructible cores. A gel coat of resin/silica/metallic power or one or more metallic spray coatings, e.g. aluminium, zinc may be applied initially to the pattern. Part curing may be effected by heating the partially cured mould in stages or continuously up to a maximum temperature of 150‹ C. over a period of six hours. The cured heat exchanger may have a thermal conductivity similar to that of the metal constituent.
