1503194 Controlling operation of printing machine W & T AVERY Ltd 22 Jan 1976 [29 Jan 1975] 3857/75 Heading B6C In a printing machine in which a web is fed through first and second printing stations to a cutter under the control of suitable sequencing circuitry provision is made for the feeding of a length of web to a reject station while the first station is printing on a following length. The invention is particularly applicable to a label printer Fig. 2 where station 30 prints fixed information, e.g. nature of a commodity, and station 34 prints selective information, e.g. weights and prices on labels, Fig. 1 (not shown) which are severed from the web by guillotine 36 and applied to the commodities. When a particular condition is reached, e.g. when plates are changed on printer 30, on exhaustion of the web or malfunction or alternatively, when the apparatus is switched on after a period of inactivity, a clearing device is operated, preferably by manual push-button. In these circumstances paper feed unit 26 and first printer 30 are operational, but second printer 34 and guillotine 36 are inactivated; the continuous label web passes through shoot (80), Fig. 5 (not shown), and out of the apparatus at (106). At the end of this cycle, e.g. after the equivalent of five labels have been rejected the guillotine 36 severs the web, and normal operation resumes.
