Abstract

1502969 Teaching arithmetic J R HARTE 22 May 1975 22220/75 Heading G5G A balance, shown in plan in Fig. 1 and pivotable about axis 26, has tapered pockets arranged in four rows, and numbered by columns to indicate their distance from the pivot line, so that by use of spherical token weights the rules of arithmetic may be demonstrated. As shown the three right-hand tokens illustrate 2 Î 2 + 4 and this is balanced by the left-hand token at position 8. The balance may be of plastics and moulded with an integral lower balance edge along 26; alternatively it may be suspended by means of holes 82. In a modification each column of conical depressions of Fig. 1 is replaced by a trough extending across the balance, so that cylindrical weights of the same diameter but lengths of an integral number of or of fractions of, units may be used, the trough being V-shaped in longitudinal cross-section to effect accurate centring.
