Abstract

1502460 Credit card L G Z LANDIS & GYR ZUG AG 16 July 1975 [19 July 1974] 29875/75 Heading B6A [Also in Division G4] A credit card carries several small optically readable devices 3 which may be holograms or suitably arranged prisms each of which represents the same predetermined unit of currency. As shown there are 80 units. The devices 3 carry coded binary data and all the devices in any one row contain the same data but any one row contains different data to the adjacent rows. When the card is used it is placed in an optical reader, e.g. using a light emitting diode and the card is moved until a valid device is found. The device may be used to pay for telephone calls. As a call is charged each valid device is destroyed, e.g. by heating, perforating, by printing colouring material on the card, by shaving the card surface or by treating the card surface with a chemical to alter its transmissive properties. The card is preferably opaque to visible light and has a surface which has a higher melting point than the material containing the data. The used devices may be separated from the card. The devices may be on a long strip of material contained in a penlike body (Figs. 4, 5, not shown).
