1502361 Vibratory compactors STOTHERT & PITT Ltd 5 Jan 1976 [3 Jan 1975] 238/75 Heading EIG [Also in Division B7] A self propelled compacting machine 1 has compactor elements 3 provided with vibrator boxes 12 which cause both compacting and propelling motion and provision for relatively angularly moving the elements for steering by an operator seated on the machine, the vibrator boxes including two shafts each carrying an eccentric mass. The elements 3 of a first embodiment are rotatable about pivots 8 and are connected via a linkage 5, 25, 10 to a handlebar 4. The linkage ensures the rotation of the elements in opposite senses when the handlebar is rotated. In another arrangement the machine chassis is articulated and the elements non rotatably mounted in respective parts, steering being effected by relative angular movement of the chassis parts. The vibrator box 12 includes a reversible hydraulic or electric motor 1 directly coupled to a shaft 16 carrying an eccentric mass 21. A second shaft 17 carrying a similar motor is keyed to a gear 18 meshing with a gear 19 rotatably mounted on shaft 16. A drive dog 22 fixed on shaft 16 engages one of two teeth 22a, 22b on gear 19 to drivingly connect the shafts, the tooth engaged depending on the direction of rotation of the motor 15. If tooth 22a, say, is engaged a vibratory force component in, say, an upward and forward direction moves the vehicle forward, whereas on reversal of the motor and engagement of tooth 22b an upward and rearward force component reverses the direction of travel of the vehicle.
