Abstract

1502173 Alkylating isoparaffins TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 1 Oct 1975 [18 Oct 1974(2)] 40163/75 Heading C5E Isoparaffins are alkylated with C 3 -C 5 olefins in the liquid phase in the presence of H 2 SO 4 catalyst in a non-back-mixing reaction zone, the process comprising: (a) contacting isoparaffin and olefin reactant hydrocarbons with sulphuric acid alkylating catalyst containing 0À0005 to 0À5 weight per cent, based on sulphuric acid, of a micelle-forming amphiphilic compound (defined) to form a hydrocarbon in acid catalyst reaction emulsion; (b) flowing the reaction emulsion, at alkylation conditions, through the non-back-mixed reaction zone at a rate sufficient to provide a Reynolds number of at least 5000 for conversion of essentially all olefin reactant while maintaining the temperature within the reaction zone within the range of- 20‹ to 100‹ F., and; (c) centrifugally separating, in a separation zone, reaction zone effluent into a hydrocarbon phase comprising unreacted isoparaffin hydrocarbon and alkylate hydrocarbon, and an acid catalyst phase under dynamic separation conditions such that separated hydrocarbon phase is immediately removed from contact with separated acid catalyst phase. Suitable micelle-forming amphiphilic compounds are N(alkyl)alkyl sulphonamides, N(alkyl) benzene sulphonamides, alkyl sulphonium salts, alkylphosphonium salts, alkyl benzene sulphonic acids, aliphatic amines, N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>11</SP>-tri(alkyl) phosphonic triamides, ammonium salts and salts of alkyl sulphates. Suitable compounds should contain at least one C 8 -C 24 alkyl radical.
