Abstract
1502134 Ceramic honeycomb structure CORNING GLASS WORKS 8 July 1975 28687/75 Heading C1J [Also in Divisions Bl and B4-B5] A particulate ceramic material mixed with an extrusion aid comprising water and methyl cellulose, is extruded into a honeycomb structure (see Divisions B4-B5) having a peripheral skin, in which defects are avoided by loading the material into the extruder barrel at a temperature of 2-15‹ F., and preferably 5-15‹ F., above its gel point, which is defined as the temperature of minimum viscosity, and by heating the extruder barrel to a temperature which is 0-15‹ F., and preferably 5‹ to 12‹ F., less than that of the material. The material may comprise powdered metal with the ceramic material, but the embodiment relates to the extrusion of a catalyst support, for an exhaust gas emission control device, from a blend of stated proportions of clay, talc, and alumina, of stated particle size distributions and proportions of refractory metallic oxides, which are mainly SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , and MgO, the proportions of methyl cellulose, water, and optionally diglycol stearate, also being stated. The honeycomb may be of oval section and may comprise 60 to 100 cells per sq. inch.
