Abstract
1502089 Production of derivatives of α-phenylpropionic acid SIGURTA FARMACEUTICI SpA 3 March 1976 [8 July 1975] 08433/76 Heading C2C The invention relates to a method of preparing an α-phenylpropionic acid derivative of formula in which A is a group selected from -COOH, -CN and -COOR 1 , R 1 being an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, comprising methylating a compound having the Formula II in which Y is -CN or -COOR 1 , R 1 being an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, with a methylating agent in the presence of a catalyst selected from tetra-alkyl-phosphonium, -arsonium and -ammonium salts, tetraarylphosphonium and -arsonium salts and mixed alkyl-aryl-phosphonium and -arsonium salts, and if desired hydrolysing the product obtained. The following intermediates are prepared in the examples: 3-benzoylphenylacetonitrile by the reaction of 3-bromomethyl-benzophenone with NaCN, α-m-benzoylphenylacetic acid butyl and methyl esters by treating 3-bromomethyl benzophenone with n-butanol and carbon monoxide in the presence of tri-n-butylamine and cis Pd[P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 ] 2 Cl 2 . The butyl ester thus produced is transesterified to produce a methyl ester of the above compound.
