Abstract

Optically active alkane- and alkene monocarboxylic acids with an asymmetric carbon atom in the 2- or 3-position, of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, L, M and N have the meanings given in Claim 1 and in which either R- or S-enantiomer prevails, are prepared. A corresponding aliphatic acrylic acid is subjected to enantioselective asymmetric hydrogenation, namely in the presence (a) of a hydrogenation catalyst in the form of a soluble coordination complex of a monovalent rhodium compound and of a chiral tertiary phosphine, the molar ratio of phosphine to the rhodium compound being at least 2:1, (b) of a solvent and (c) of a base. The process allows easy access to chiral dihydrogeranic acid and other intermediates for the preparation of chiral vitamin E, citronellal and menthol.
