Abstract

150,138. Fairweather, W., (Singer Manufacturing Co.). July 4, 1919. Sewing-machines; needles, vibrating laterally. -Relates to machines such as are described in Specification 8706/13 in which the needle is vibrated transversely by a rod 56 supported and oscillated by a cam and constrained by a link pivotally connecting an intermediate point in it with a pivot pin J. The amplitude and the field of the needle vibrations are determined by the position of the pivot J; the pivot being carried by a ball-crank lever 102 pivoted at 114 on an arm of a lever 96. The movement of the lever 96 about its pivot 113 determines the field of the vibrations and the movement of the lever 102 about the pivot 114 determines the amplitude. The invention consists in the automatic and variable control of the levers 96, 102 for the purpose of producing a variety of ornamental seams such as shown in Fig. 16. For the purpose of description it is assumed, in the first place, that a leverplate 119 is fixed. In front of it are two quadrant-levers 120, 121 coupled to the levers 102, 96 by links 109, 129. The levers 120, 121 are coupled to the plate 119 bv pins 126, 124 which may engage any of three holes. These are marked R. C and L. The link 129 has three slots similarly marked for engagement with a pin 97 on the lever 96 so that the length of the link can be raised. When these three adjustments are similarly made to one of the three alternatives R. C. and L., the machine is adjusted for producing similar zig-zag seams but disposed respectively to the right, symmetrically and to the left of the zero position of the needle line. If now the lever 119 is slowly oscillated by a step-by-step cam and the link 129 be, as shown, connected to the lever 121 in line with its pivot, then the lever 120 will move the pivot J to vary the amplitude of the needle vibrations but the field will not be changed. Seams such as B and A, Fig. 16 and the handed equivalent of B are thereby produced. If the lever 120 is disconnected from the plate 119 the lever 102 is locked to the lever 96 and the lever 102 is properly positioned relative to the lever 96 (a scale for this purpose is provided at 111) the movement of the lever 96 will not affect the amplitude of the needle vibrations but will vary the field and so a seam such as D, Fig. 13, is produced. Finally, if both levers 120, 121 are operative, seams such as C, Fig. 16, are produced and by varying the adjustments of the links and levers various. changes in the appearance of this seam can be effected. The portions X, Y of the seams shown illustrate the effect of varying the step-by-step feed of the control cam. The cam is driven in a known manner by a silent ratchet gear and an eccentric of variable throw.
