Abstract

1501325 Testing ignition systems of IC engines GUNSONS COLORPLUGS Ltd 16 June 1976 24937/76 Heading G1U The dwell angle of the points of an I.C. engine ignition system is measured by connecting the points in series with the battery and a resistor and by using a meter arrangement as shown in Fig. 3 to compare the current that flows when they are closed with the average current that flows when they are repeatedly operated by rotation of the engine. In use the meter arrangement is first connected across the battery Fig. 4 (not shown) and a variable resistor is adjusted to achieve full scale deflection whilst the engine is being rotated by the starter motor. The meter arrangement is then connected in series with the battery and the points Fig. 5 (not shown) and the deflection achieved whilst the engine is again rotated by the starter motor is noted. The reduction in the deflection is indicative of the dwell angle.
