Abstract

1501214 Method of imaging surface XEROX CORP 23 April 1975 16867/75 Heading B6C A method of producing an image in response to electrical input signals representing the image comprises wetting the substrate selectively in non-image areas in response to the signals, and applying ink uniformly over image and non-image areas, the ink being immiscible with the wetting liquid and thus not being retained in non-image areas. In a preferred embodiment, input 11, e.g. a computer or facsimile scanner, controls liquid-jet printer 10 supplied with wetting liquid 13 from reservoir 14, the jet impinging on receiving surface 12, power, a belt or the roller surface itself; the surface 12 is then inked by applicator roller 25. It is stated that since the wetting liquid contains no drying agents, colorants, viscosity modifiers &c., the jet orifice is less likely to clog. A plurality of jets may be provided with a single wide roller 25; alternatively when recording a trace, a single jet may co-operate with a narrow roller following a spiral path.
