Abstract

1500602 Lasers JERSEY NUCLEAR-AVCO ISOTOPES Inc 20 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 2356/75 Heading H1C In a laser in which a liquid with lasing capability such as rhodamine 6G flows transversely of the optical axis 54 in the laser active region 27, Fig. 4, an elongate laser active region is defined by two transparent semi-cylindrical members 47, 48 behind which respective flash tube pumping sources are located. The semicylindrical members divide a housing into inlet and outlet chambers, a diverter 23 being located in the outlet chamber 32 adjacent the active region to effect uniform distribution and pressure of the flowing liquid. Each chamber ineludes a respective manifold 18, 19 formed with ducts 71 through which the liquid is introduced into the inlet chamber and extracted from the outlet chamber. The manifold 19 may augment the diverter in obtaining uniform liquid distribution in the active region. The flash tubes 55, 56, Figs. 1 and 2, are mounted in removable support members 57, 58 by clips 68, 69, and are backed by U-shaped reflectors 63, 64 forming a duct for a circulated coolant such as water. Outlet and inlet pipes 67 and 73 are provided for the coolant, the latter being insulated from the housing and providing a high voltage electrical connection to the flash tube clips 69. A heat insulating material 65 fills the spaces between the support members and the semicylindrical members, and electrical insulating plates 59, 60 shroud the outer surfaces of the support members. Seals such as 35, 36, 45 and 46 are provided between the various structural components, and windows 25, 26 for the laser radiation are fitted to the housing end walls. External resonator mirrors 83, 84 are used, Fig. 3, adjustable tuning of the laser radiation being effected by angular adjustment of mirror 64 relative to a fixed chain 82 of dispersion prisms.
