Abstract

1500519 Controlling heat input to distillation column UOP Inc 10 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 14733/75 Heading C5E [Also In Division B1] In a method for controlling the heat input to the reboiler section 4a of a hydrocarbon distillation column in response to variation in the steady state operation of the column, the heat input, e.g. from a hot fluid or fuel line 19, to reboiler heater 17 is regulated in response to a signal representative of the flow rate of vapour passing into fractionation section 1 from reboiler section 4a, e.g. through the orifice plate or a venturi in riser 11, bottoms liquid being passed to and from the reboiler section to air from heater 17, e.g. via 37 and 38. A portion only of the bottoms liquid may be passed through heater 17, a second portion being passed through another heat recovery reboiler. The method may be used in the recovery of styrene from an ethylbenzene dehydrogenation system, the separation of xylene isomers, separation of aromatic/non-aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures and ethylbenzene from xylene isomers. Thus in an extractive distillation process, stock comprising 83À96% by volume aromatic hydrocarbons, 2À45% naphthenes and 13À95% paraffins is introduced at 2, sulpholane solvent containing 3À25% water esters at 2 at 260‹ F. at a solvent/stock mol. ratio of 3:1. Reboiler section 4a operates at 17À0 p.s.i.g. and 350‹ F. The temperature of bottom material flowing through 37 to heater 17 is 312‹ F. and sufficient fuel is fed via line 16 to produce a mixed phase in line 38 at 350‹ F. If there is an increase in rate of flow through conduit 37 to heater 17 resulting in a lower temperature in liquid returned via 38, the resulting decrease in flow of vapour through riser 11 is sensed by flow recorder controller 13 and valve 15 is operated to increase the flow of fuel to heater 17.
