Abstract
1500326 Fermented whey foodstuffs for animals FERMA - GRO CORP 15 Aug 1975 34086/75 Heading A2B [Also in Divisions C1 and C6] A method of cultivating Lactobacillus acidophilus in the presence of kelp extract and, optionally, a suplement of cobalt ions whereby to produce a nutrient composition for plants and animals, involves preparing a base culture comprising whey from natural milk or soy milk inoculated with Lactobacillus acido philus organisms, fermenting the base culture until an organism density of at least one thousand million per millimetre is obtained. adding kelp extract having a concentration of from 25% to 35% solids to the base culture, the rate of addition being such that the pH never exceeds 4.3, periodically adding a nutrient composition to the fermenting culture, and continuing fermentation until the organism density is within the range of from 1.5 thousand million to 2.0 thousand million per millimetre and the percent acidity is within the range of from 3.35% to 3.55% by weight. A liquid product which can be utilised as a feed suplement for animals, is obtained by addition to the final culture of cobalt carbonate, ferrous lactate and 88% grade lactic acid The final composition typically contains 2- 5% of kelp extract, dry weight basis.
