Abstract

1500134 Coated polyester films IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Sept 1975 [18 Oct 1974] 45205/74 Heading B2E A coated synthetic polyester film comprises a self-supporting synthetic polyester film, which polyester is a condensation product of a dicarboxylic acid or a lower (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl diester thereof, or bis (p-carboxyphenoxy) ethane, with an alkylene glycol, coated on one or both surfaces with a layer which comprises (i) polyvinylalcohol, or partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate which has been hydrolysed to a degree of at least 72 mole %. (ii) 10 to 70% by weight, based on the weight of (i) plus (ii), of a wax, a polymer or copolymer of vinyl acetate, or a homopolymer or copolymer of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, or esters thereof. The coated weight of the dried coating layer in terms of the weight of (i) is preferably 0.04 to 0.3 g/m<SP>2</SP>. Preferred films are biaxially oriented and heat set polyesters, especially polyethylene terephthalate. The copolymers methacrylic acid or acrylic acid, or esters thereof, may contain un to 50% by weight of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, e.g. styrene, alkyl substituted styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, acrylamide and methacrylamide or (ii) may be polyvinylacetate or a copolymer of vinyl acetate, preferably with vinyl chloride. The layer may also comprise surfactants, anti-static agents and finely-divided inorganic materials, e.g. ground glass, titanium dioxides, calcium carbonate, silica, silicates, chalk, talc, diatomaceous earth, zinc oxide, magnesium carbonate and zirconia. The coating may be applied by bead, dip, spray, roller or slot coating, preferably from an aqueous medium. In the Examples, the surfactant is nonylphenol/polyethylene oxide condensate, the film is biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate, component (i) is polyvinylacetate of polymerisation degree 550 hydrolysed to a degree of (1) (3) 88 mole %, (2) 72.5 mole %; component (it) is (1) (2) ethylacrylate/methylmethacrylate/ methacrylic acid copolymer, (3) polyvinylacetate. In comparative Examples component (ii) is omitted in (A) composition of Ex. (1); (B) composition of Ex. (2).
