Abstract

1500038 Light guides EI DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 25 June 1975 [26 June 1974] 26985/75 Heading G2J A fibre optic member 10 comprising a plurality of optical fibres 12 is secured to a terminal 20, having a frusto-conical end portion 36, by expanding the ends of the fibres, e.g. by heating them to engage the outwardly flared surface of the portion 36 in the terminal. The expanded ends are polygonal in cross-section, and may form a lens 40, as shown. The terminal may be plastics or metal, and in one embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the outward end of surface 36 is engaged in a hollow support (84) in which are mounted either a light source and a lens, or a photo-responsive element.
