Abstract
149,994. Quevedo, L. T. Aug. 11, 1919, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act] Air-ships; aerostats; cars; propelling; balancing and regulating altitude; tanks, arrangement of.- The loads on an airship, and particularly the fuel tanks, are distributed longitudinally in accordance with the buoyancy of the balloon, the used fuel being replaced, and variations in buoyancy due to rain, snow, &c. being compensated, by water ballast obtained by condensing the exhaust or from the sea. The fuel may be stored within or outside the envelope in two longitudinal tubes T, Fig. 2, of waterproof fabric divided into compartments 1, 2, 3, 4 and having a waterproof diaphragm secured along diametrically opposite lines of the tube. Fuel is withdrawn from the lower side of this diaphragm into a service-tank d and a corresponding weight of water is pumped in above the diaphragm by a pump b. A similar tube also runs through the air ballonets so that water may be introduced to compensate for variations in buoyancy as the ballonets are filled and emptied. The balloon may be of the section shown in Fig. 5. A triangular-section car is suspended from a single line in the envelope. The propellers are placed as high as possible and provided with screens D, D<1> to protect the envelope. The main car may be central, or placed forward as shown in Fig. 6, and the balloon formed with a rigid conical nose C sustained by a boom P and stay-rods t.
