Abstract

1499724 Gas turbine ducted fan engines; acoustic ducts GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 22 Jan 1975 [15 Feb 1974] 2762/75 Headings F1B, F1C, F1G and F1J The invention relates to an acoustic duct and is described with reference to the fan duct of a gas turbine ducted fan engine. The duct has an asymmetric, peripherally discontinuous acoustic lining 20 attached to the inner surface thereof for absorbing sound propagating within the duct. The lining is so located as to alter the direction of sound emitted from the end of the duct and to obtain preferential enhanced suppression of sound in at least one pre-selected angular sector of the directional pattern. In the embodiment shown it is stated that with the acoustic lining at the upper 180 degrees arcuate surface of the duct noise suppression to an observer on the ground is enhanced. In a second embodiment the upper half of the inner surface is lined with one acoustic material 20 such as fibrous material and the lower half is lined with a second acoustic material 22 such as honeycomb, resonant chamber panel material, the first material having a higher sound absorption coefficient than the second material. In Fig. 5 which represents the exhaust duct of an industrial gas turbine plant, there are two arcuate strips 24a, 24b of the same acoustic material disposed at the lateral inner surfaces of the duct.
