Abstract
1499593 Measuring voltage CROWCON (INSTRUMENTS) Ltd 29 March 1976 [3 April 1975] 13693/75 Heading G1U In monitoring a parameter (e.g. gas concentration) at a remote location a unit is provided at the location which controls the frequency of an oscillator therein, the oscillator providing the drive signal for a 'switched mode' regulator whose stabilized output powers the unit, the unit being connected to a central station over power supply cable, and the ripple frequency thereon is measured at that station to determine the parameter. The regulator R supplies a stabilized voltage to the sensor bridge B whose output voltage controls the frequency of an oscillator VCO which provides a triangular waveform to a regulator control circuit. The stabilized voltage is compared with a Zener diode reference voltage in the control, and the difference is compared to the triangular waveform to provide a pulse-train whose mark/space ratio controls the regulator output voltage. Due to the switching action of the regulator, a ripple frequency appears on the unregulated supply from the cable link, the frequency being representative of the bridge output. At the central station, Fig. 3 (not shown), this frequency is filtered out and measured.
