Abstract

1499587 Fastener driving tool MAX CO Ltd 20 Nov 1975 [20 Nov 1974 17 June 1975 28 June 1975] 47887/75 Heading B4C [Also in Division F1] An I.C. engine for driving a power tool, e.g. a nail driver, comprises a cylinder 12 having a piston 14 with a nail-driving rod 142, the cylinder 12 being surrounded by a combustion chamber 15 and brought into communication therewith by the opening a valve 18 by means of explosion of an air-fuel gas mixture in the combustion chamber. Fuel gas is supplied from a reservoir 23 and pressurized air is supplied from a compressor 22 to a reservoir 21. The pressurized air is used to form an explosive mixture, to maintain the valve 18 closed and to scavenge the combustion chamber. To operate the engine a pilot valve 35 is moved upwardly, thus lifting a fuel/air control valve 36 against a spring bias and closing an exhaust valve 33. Compressed air enters the chamber 15 via a duct 46c whilst fuel-gas also passes (via regulator 24 and ducts 47, 46b) into the chamber, and as the pressure on both sides 362, 363 of valve 36 equalizes the valve 36 closes under the spring bias. A sparking plug 16 is fired causing an explosion and high pressure in the combustion chamber 15, which pressure lifts a control valve 28 and a sensing valve 50. The control valve 28 puts a duct 31 in communication with the atmosphere via a duct 30a and allows compressed air to escape from a cavity 191 enabling the valve 18 to lift and explosion gases to enter into the cylinder 12 to drive the piston 14 downwardly. Sensing valve 50 allows compressed air to pass from a duet 51 into a scavenging chamber 48 and along a duct 49, to lift open the exhaust valve 33; this venting exhaust duct 34 to atmosphere; and also to force down a spring-biased scavenging valve 383. Scavenging air passes along ducts 40, 41 through the combustion chamber 15 and out of the exhaust duct 34. A delay in venting the exhaust duct 34 and opening the scavenging valve 383 is obtained by adjusting the volume of the scavenging chamber 48 and the size of a vent 52 to atmosphere. As compressed air escapes through vent 52 the scavenging valve 383 closes. Compressed air forces down control valve 28 and valve 18 while the piston 14 is returned by a spring 14a. In a modification (not shown) the spring 14a is omitted and gases on the lower side of the piston are admitted to the combustion chamber, which gases return the piston to its upper position after a power stroke.
