Abstract

1499538 Spring balance SALTER HOUSEWARES Ltd 16 Dec 1976 [16 Dec 1975] 51377/75 Heading G1W A spring balance comprises a parallel motion leaf spring unit 65, an intermediate lever 15 arranged to pivot about a horizontal axis in accordance with the vertical deflection of the spring unit and having integral gear teeth 69, and a pinion 14 meshing with the teeth 69, the pinion being rotatable about a vertical axis and carrying a weight indicating member 23. The spring unit 65 comprises a pair of leaf springs 28 inter-connecting frame members 26, 29. Frame member 29 is located within slots 80 of pedestal 67 and fixed thereto by screws 22. Frame member 26 is secured to a bracket 24 by locating studs 82 and screw 27, and bracket 24 supports a weighing platform 1, an extension 70 of member 26 co-operating with a screw (not shown) fitting in lug 116 to limit upward movement of platform 1. A plastics block 12 is secured to frame member 29 by an angle bracket 25 formed of a ductile metal which may be deformed during assembly to adjust the position of block 12. Pinion 14, which is also of plastics material, is mounted on block 12 by means of a fixed lug 88 and a snap-in lug 13. Pointer 23 is formed of wire and includes a rectangular loop which clips into a groove 85 on the pinion 14. The lever 15 is pivoted on block 12 by means of trunnions 95. Lever 15 is formed of plastics material and is mounted such that the arm 97 carrying the integral teeth 69 is lightly laterally flexed by engagement with the pinion to provide a force biasing the arm 97 and the pinion towards each other, grooves 114 in the arm 97 increasing its flexibility. The other arm 98 of the lever 15 has a lug 100 biased, by means of spring 112, into engagement with a plastics cap 17 mounted on the end of a screw 19 which is mounted on the end of a plastics cantilever arm 16. Arm 16 is rigidly fixed to frame member 26 by means of a lug 102 on the arm engaging a slot 104 on the member 26, and by means of a screw 20. Screw 109 may be rotated through an aperture 108 in member 26 to vary its axial position relative to member 26 and hence to adjust the balance sensitivity. A screw 200 alters the initial vertical position of the free end of arm 16 to set the zero.
