Abstract
1499315 Token readers COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd 14 March 1975 [16 March 1974] 50928/75 Divided out of 1499314 Heading G4V A token reader comprises means defining a cavity 3 for receiving a token 1, means for producing an electrical signal representative of physical characteristics of the token, and means for severing the token. Token 1 has a hole 7, Fig. 2, and a series of holes 2 therein. Activation of solenoid 4 causes plunger 5 to insert pin 6 in hole 7; also latch 8 engages notch 9 and locks the plunger. Severing of the token occurs when solenoid 12 is activated to extend plunger 11. The plunger is spring biased and on its return movement latch 14 pivots latch 8 to allow spring biased plunger 5 to effect a return movement. Fig. 2 shows electronic components whereby a television set can be connected to one of a plurality of inputs. Each phototransistor 15 is arranged in series with a resistor and may be used to control programme channel selection. A light source 16 activates a phototransistor through an aperture 2, which phototransistor provides an output 18 which may control a channel selector. A different card having a differently positioned hole 2 would activate another phototransistor. The token reader also has an 8-bit shift register 19 which receives a 50 Hz square wave pulse train on an output 20. Means (not shown) are arranged to provide an enabling input 21. Card 1 extends between light emitting diodes 22 and a large area photodetector 23. When shift register 19 is enabled by input 21, the pulses on input 20 cause the diodes 22 to light one at a time in sequence so that the output of photodetector 23 comprises three pulses in time with the second, fifth and seventh pulses (as shown). The output of the photodetector thus constitutes a "card code" signal. An eighth output of the shift register 19 may be used to indicate the end of any one card scanning sequence. In a further embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) conductive strips on the token are used instead of holes. Conductive inks or optically reflective surfaces may also be utilized.
