Abstract
1499064 Polyurethane compositions TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 12 July 1976 [25 Sept 1975] 28857/76 Headings C3R and C3P A polyurethane composition comprises the product obtained by reacting (a) an organic polyisocyanate; (b) a reactive polyhydroxy compound; and (c) a monohydric polyether/ polymer mixture obtained by the in situ free radical polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in a reaction medium comprising a monohydric compound of the formula wherein X and Y, which may be the same or different, are each hydrogen or methyl, m is a number having a value of from 15 to 50, and R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, alkaryl, or araryl radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, the ratio of polyisocyonate (a) to polyhydroxy compound (b) being such that the isocyanate index is from 0À9 to 1À4. The amount of monohydric polyether/polymer mixture in the composition may be from 10 to 25% by weight based on the weight of polyhydroxy compounds. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer may be vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile or styrene or a mixture of acrylonitrile with a comonomer selected from the other aforementioned monomers in a weight ratio of acrylonitrile to comonomer of from 3 : 1 to 1 : 3. The polymerized, ethylenically unsaturated monomer may comprise from 5 to 25% by weight of the polyether/polymer mixture. Suitable polyhydroxy compounds (b) are polyether polyols having mol. wts. from 2000 to 7000 and containing from 40 to 80% primary hydroxy groups. In a typical example the composition comprises a foam obtained by reacting (1) a monohydric polyether/polymer mixture obtained by polymerizing a 60 : 40 weight mixture of acrylonitrile and styrene in an ethylene oxide-capped propylene oxide adduct of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether at 80‹ C.; (2) an 80/20 toluene diisocyanate/polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanate blend: and (3) an adduct of trimethylolpropane and ethylene and propylene oxide having a mol. wt. of 5500 in the presence of water, a mixed tert. amine/metal catalyst and a surfactant. The monohydric polyether/vinyl polymer mixtures are produced by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s), e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile or styrene in a reactive medium comprising a monohydric polyether including those of the above formula in the presence of a free radical catalyst, e.g. peroxides and azo compounds.
