Abstract

1412797 Polymer/polyol compositions; polyurethane foams UNION CARBIDE CORP 29 Aug 1972 [30 Aug 1971] 39960/72 Headings C3C C3P and C3R A fluid polymer/polyol composition suitable for use in the production of polyurethane foams is obtained by polymerizing by means of a free radical catalyst, at a temperature at which the half-life of the catalyst is no more than 6 minutes (1) a monomer mixture of (a) 33-75 wt. per cent acrylonitrile and (b) 25-67 wt. per cent styrene, said wt. per cents of (a) and (b) being based on the total weight of (a) and (b), dissolved or dispersed in (2) a liquid polyol having a hydroxyl no. from 20 to 150 and maintaining a sufficiently low monomer to polyol ratio throughout the reaction mixture during the polymerization such as to produce a polymer consisting substantially wholly of polymer particles having diameters less than one micron, the relative proportions of total monomer and polyol used in the reaction being from 10-30% of monomers and 70-90% polyol based on the combined weight of monomers and polyol. The product is stated to be a mixture of homo- and co-polymers of the styrene and the nitrile, unreacted polyol and products of graft polymerization on to the polyol. suitable polyols include hydroxy-terminated polyesters; alkylene oxide adducts of polyhydroxy alkanes, non-reducing sugars and their derivatives, phosphorus acids and polyphenols; and polyols from natural oils: condensates of glycerol with propylene oxide or propylene and ethylene oxides (in blocks) are exemplified. Azobisisobutyronitrile is a preferred catalyst for polymerization. Polyurethane foams are prepared from the polymer/polyol compositions by conventional means, preferably by a " one-shot " process in which the composition is reacted and foamed with a polyisocyanate and water. In the examples the isocyanate is a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6- tolylene diisocyanates and the reaction is catalysed by bis-(dimethylaminoethyl) ether and stannous octanoate. A surfactant, e.g. of the polysiloxane and/or polyalkylene ether types, and a flame retardant such as tris- (chloroethyl) phosphate may also be included.
