Abstract

1498839 Ship carrying refrigerated containers GRASSO'S KONINKLIJKE MACHINEFABRIEKEN NV 22 Dec 1975 [23 Dec 1974] 52393/75 Heading F4H [Also in Division B7] A ship for the transportation of containers is provided with a plurality of air cooling units for connection to respective containers. Each cooling unit comprises an insulated case 2 into which air from a container is drawn by means of a ventilator 8 through an aperture 3. The air then passes over a heat exchanger 7 and the cooled air is then discharged into the container through an aperture 4. A temperature sensor 10 is connected to a control system which adjusts the flow of refrigerant through the heat exchanger to maintain the air at a desired temperature. Air is sampled via a duct 19 and the carbonic acid content monitored. If the level of carbonic acid present exceeds a predetermined value, the control system causes a valve in an air supply duct 16 and/or a valve in an air discharge duct 17 to open thus admitting fresh air into the container. The control system may comprise a computer for controlling a plurality of cooling units each connected to a respective container.
