1498681 Thin-film magnetic head PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Jan 1975 [24 Jan 1974] 2603/75 Heading G5R A magnetic head has two thin film magnetic core parts shaped in the form of a loop 18 and an I respectively with the I-core bridging the loop core and having both its ends magnetically coupled thereto, the overlapping portions of the two core parts at one end of the I-core forming opposed polepieces with a layer 19 of non- magnetic material therebetween to define a transducing gap l 1 , and windings 15, 16 wrapped around the loop core 18 as shown in Fig. 3. The layer 19 may be electrically conductive and form a recording winding. The loop 18 is split at the centre of gap l 1 by an auxiliary gap l 2 at right angles thereto, thus effectively dividing the transducing gap into two aligned gaps. During playback, the playback signal is the sum of the signals in windings 15, 16 and the difference of these signals gives an error signal which may be used by a servo to centre the head on the recording track. An x-y array of such heads on a single support may be positioned correctly by operating only one of the heads as part of the servo circuit. An alternative embodiment without the auxiliary gap l 2 is also described, Fig. 2 (not shown). The track width B may be 5 to 10 micrometers.
