Abstract

1498571 Oxidizing carbon monoxide in gases CALGON CORP 9 March 1976 [12 March 1975] 09344/76 Heading C1A [Also in Division Bl] Carbon monoxide is oxidized to CO 2 in the presence of sulphur dioxide using a catalyst prepared by impregnating the activated carbon with a catalyst composition comprising copper, chromium, nickel, iron, manganese, gold, silver, platinum, palladium or rhodium or an oxide, hydroxide, or salt thereof and with an inert hydrophobic compound in an amount of 1-20% wt. based on the carbon. The hydrophobic compound reduces the water absorption by the catalyst and thus also the formation of sulphuric acid thereon. The activated carbon may be oxidatively modified to add 1-5% wt. oxygen thereto (see Specification 1,498,572). Examples describe the preparation of PdCl 2 + CuCl 2 catalysts on unoxidized activated carbon or activated carbon oxidized by treatment with nitric acid and impregnated with naphthalene or anthracene by mixing with the solid hydrocarbon and allowing to stand at either room temperature (naphthalene) or 125‹ C. (anthracene) until all the hydrocarbon has been vaporized and the vapour absorbed by the catalyst. The catalysts were then used to oxidize CO (0À5% v) in a stream of air at 80‹ F., 100% r.h. and a space velocity of 3,000 h-' containing 200 p.p.m. SO 2 . After use the catalysts were regenerated by drying in a stream of dry air at ambient temperature or 125‹ C.
