The derivative may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula where A is a halogen atom or a group of formula ArSO 2 - or R<SP>3</SP>COO-, Ar being an aryl group and R<SP>3</SP> an alkyl or aryl group, with a base. In an example 7-nitro-6-heptenoic acid methyl ester is prepared from 6-acetoxy-7-nitro-heptenoic acid methyl ester.
