Abstract

1498461 Enzymolysis of cholesteryl esters EASTMAN KODAK CO 24 March 1975 [25 March 1974] 12202/75 Heading C2U [Also in Division G1] Cholesterol esters in an aqueous liquid are hydrolysed to liberate cholesterol by treating the aqueous liquid with both a protease and a lipase having cholesterol esterase activity (defined as r lipase which releases cholesterol from cholesterol linoleate when incubated with this under specified conditions). The aqueous liquid may be blood serum may be treated with 600 to 1500 units (20 to 50 mg.) of the lipase and 50 to 500 units (5 to 50 mg.) of the protease per ml at a temperature of from 25‹ to 55‹ C. and a pH of from 6À5 to 9À5, and the cholesterol released may be determined by gas chromatography. The lipase may be of plant or animal origin but is preferably a microbial lipase.
