Abstract

1498457 Brush making machines UNIVERSE MACHINE CO Inc 18 Dec 1975 51993/75 Heading A4K [Also in Division B3] A brush making machine comprises an indexing conveyer or drum on which a plurality of workholders 26 are mounted, the work-holders being shuffled from the conveyer at selected work stations, e.g. the drilling and filling stations, to allow the selected operation to be performed independently of the conveyer or drum, the workholders being re-engaged with the conveyer on completion of the operations to allow the workholders to be moved to the next operative position. Each work-holder comprises a plate 28 carrying at one end a pair of jaws 44 adjustable about vertical studs 46, a brush blank being held between the jaws 44 and a further jaw 36 mounted on a further plate 32 slidably mounted below plate 28 and biased towards the one end of the plate 28 by a pair of springs 40. The one end of the plate 28 is also provided with a slot 134 in which a hook 132 on a piston 130 of a piston and cylinder unit positioned at each of the selected work stations engages. Each of the selected work stations includes a secondary work-holder 102. The secondary work-holder is mounted for movement in two perpendicular directions by a slide block 104 mounted on rods 106 and a slide block 110 mounted on rods 112 connected to the slide block 104. The secondary work-holder is carried by a pair of vertical rods 116 slidably mounted in the block 110 and mounts a roller which engages a plate 124 on the slide block 104, the contour of the plate 124 matching the contour of the brush blank tuft receiving surface. Movement of the work-holder 26 from the conveyer to the secondary work-holder is effected on retraction of the piston 130. Indexing of the conveyer is controlled by extension of a piston-rod 62 linked to a spring-biased pawl (58), Fig. 6 (not shown) selectively engaged within the notches of a ratchet wheel (56) fixed to one of the sprockets 14 about which the conveyer is mounted. The brush blanks are loaded into the work holders at a loading station 76 comprising two vertically extending brush blank guides 80, 88 and a pair of laterally spaced support rods 82 on which one of the guides 88 is adjustably mounted to accommodate brush blanks of different lengths. The loading station also includes a piston and cylinder unit 90, the piston being extended to contact the sliding plate 32 of an empty work holder to move the jaws 36 away from jaws 44 to allow a brush blank to be located in the work holder. A brush discharge station is located diametrically below the loading station and comprises a further piston and cylinder unit which contacts the sliding plate to allow the finished brush to drop from the machine. If the machine comprises a rotary drum Figs. 8-10 (not shown), the drum is rotatable about a vertical axis and the work-holders are movable vertically downwards from the drum to the secondary work-holders.
