Abstract

1498410 Nitro-diaryl sulphides and disulphides IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 May 1975 [25 June 1974] 28115/74 Heading C2C Diaryl sulphides and disulphides containing nitro substituents in either the 2- or 4-positions, or both are obtained by reacting a halobenzene containing nitro substituents in either the 2- or 4-positions, or both with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal sulphide or disulphide, the disulphide optionally being formed in situ from a mixture of the corresponding alkali metal sulphide and sulphur, in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (which is a substance which promotes reaction by transferring a reactant from aqueous to non-aqueous phase where said reactant undergoes reaction at the same time releasing the phase transfer catalyst back into the aqueous phase for re-use). Specified starting materials are 1-chloro-2- or 4-nitrobenzenes, 1 - chloro - 2,4 - dinitrobenzene and 1,4 - dichloro - 2 - nitrobenzene. Specified phase transfer catalysts are quaternary ammonium and phosphonium salts.
