Abstract

1498355 Electrolytic decontamination WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 30 April 1976 [30 April 1975 4 March 1976] 17722/76 Heading C7B An aqueous medium is electrolytically decontaminated in a cell between whose electrodes are disposed oxidation or reduction catalyst particles containing at least one oxide of a metal of Group IVa, Va, VIb, VIIb or VIII using A.C. of 0À5- 800 Hz. The oxide may be coated on to conductive, nonconductive or semi-conductive substrate particles e.g. perlite (others listed, coating being conventional) and there may also be present absorptive and/or conductive particles e.g. of graphite and/or active carbon. A static or circulating bed may be used. The metals concerned are Ge, Sn, Pb, Bi, Sb, Cr, Mn, Tc, Mo, W, Rh and Gp VIII e.g. Ni or Fe. A balanced A.C. at 0À1-30 A/cm<SP>2</SP>, 1À67-150 V and a temperature of 5-95‹C may be used. Conventional electrode materials are listed e.g. a steel cathode mesh and carbon anode. Contaminants removed include sewage, phenolics and CN, other organics and inorganics being listed. When a bed containing active carbon is used, this may be regenerated by expulsion of absorbed material using A.C. of higher voltage than used in the decontamination step. A plurality of particle beds of one or both kinds may be used in series and/or parallel. The cell of Fig. 8 contains alternating beds 152, 154 of each type and bias four hollow electrodes 140 (140') arranged at 90 degrees around the axis. The pairs at 180 degrees are interconnected at their bases via passages 146, 146' and form a U through which coolant is circulated. A cooling jacket 112 surrounds the electrolysis zone. Operation may be effected at ambient, reduced or increased pressure.
