1498103 Attendance time recorders; counters SIMPLEX TIME RECORDER CO 6 March 1975 [13 March 1974] 9424/75 Headings G4T and G4D [Also in Division B6] A printing device for printing multi-digit numbers particularly for the clock times in attendance time recorders comprises a plurality of coaxial and adjacently disposed number wheels 26, 28, 30, 32 of annular form with internal teeth 170 for being indexed, by an indexing pawl 152. The number wheels are of equal diameter with the circumference thereof supporting the number sequences occurring in different digits in the form of printing types 164. The number of internal teeth correspond to the number of printing types of the appropriate number wheel, the indexing pawl having an indexing dog for each wheel, 156, 158, 160, 162 the length of which progressively decreases from number wheel to number wheel beginning from the number wheel with the lowest digit value. Each of the wheels except that with the higher digit value has teeth A6 of increased depth, these allow the deeper engagement of the associated indexing dog at those positions at which an adjacent number wheel with a higher digit value is to be simultaneously indexed. The time is printed on a real time basis; that is zero is taken as a certain time and the hours are measured from them whilst allowing for tea and lunch breaks. Printing head 14 is pivotally mounted on shaft 16 by plates 20. The head is moved between side walls 10 by means of servomotor 70, pinions 74 and gearwheel 76, engaging with bush 38 which is attached by bar 44 to a plastics bush 22 mounted slidably on shaft 16. Motor 70 is activated by a current pulse from a control system of the time recording clock (not shown). Its action is terminated by a switch 72 that is controlled by lever 92 and disc cam 82. The head is moved about shaft 16 to print by means of magnet 56. Indexing of the number wheels is initiated by indexing wheel 110 rotating lever 102 which in turn pivots indexing lever 34 about shaft 142. To cater for rest periods wheel 110 is only in engagement with lever 102 when a plunger magnet (134) Fig. 3 (not shown) is activated. The magnet is controlled by a time recording clock programme control system (not shown). The number wheels are rotatably mounted on a bearing cylinder 140 that is mounted on the side member 20 which is on the left of Fig. 1. The indexing pawl 152 is rotatably mounted on lever 34 and has an arm 155 that extends into cylinder 140 and on which the indexing dogs 156 to 162 are mounted. These can engage with teeth 170 and as previously mentioned deeper teeth 176 allow an adjacent number wheel with a higher digit value to be simultaneously indexed at the requisite time. Pawls 202 prevent reverse rotation of the wheels. In a modification Fig. 10 (not shown) the ratchet is shaped and biased to ensure accurate location of the wheels. A plate 52 carries a card retaining means (216) Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown) and which is mounted on the casing of the clock (not shown) to form a rear wall 210. An indexing device moves a stop (218) in known manner.
