Abstract

1498038 Non-woven fabric; web formation BONDINA Ltd 28 Feb 1975 [1 March 1974] 9439/74 Headings DIN and D1R A non-woven web comprises first zones each of which extends in the length direction, is at least 10 cm wide and has a substantially uniform fibre content throughout the length and breadth of the zone, adjacent first zones having different fibre contents and merging into one another. As shown fibres of 3 to 8 denier from hopper 10 are formed into a web by cord or garnett 2 and cross-lapped to form a 190 cm wide web 1. A narrower web 3 is carded from coarser 20 dernier nylon fibres from hopper 11 and cross-laid onto web 1. The two layer web is randomised throughout its thickness by garnett 5 which operation also merges zone 8, Fig. 2, which is of 90 g/m<SP>2</SP> weight and has 40 g/m<SP>2</SP> of the coarser fibres with the 50 g/m<SP>2</SP> zones 7 to form intermediate zones 9. The continuous length of web may be bonded and coated with a thermoplastic adhesive. Interlinings 15 for jackets are then cut from the web, the stiffer zone 8 being used for the upper portion of the jacket. As described and claimed in Specification 1498037 the binder or binders may be applied to give second zones in which the nature and/or concentration of the binder is different in adjacent zones which may or may not correspond with the first zones. Thus zone 8 may receive a stiffer binder in greater concentration than do zone 7 with zones 9 receiving an intermediate treatment, e.g. a mixture of the two binder compositions, preferably the viscous or foamed aqueous binder compositions are applied by doctoring. Alternatively the binders may be sprayed or printed. The coating of adhesive may likewise be applied non-uniformly. Preferably within each zone the coating is discontinuous. It may be sprayed, scattered or printed. The fibres and binders may be coloured differently in different zones. In an alternative embodiment two webs of equal width are laid offset from one another. The two layer web may be randomised throughout its thickness by cording garnetting, air laying or a combination of these methods. A multizonal web may be formed in a single operation by feeding into a carding machine different amounts of fibres across the width of the card or by using a differential air flow through the condensing drum of an air layer web former. The multizonal web may be needled. In a further embodiment continuous filaments are spun from a single linear spinneret which provides coarser filaments at the centre of its line of orifices, the spinneret being oscillated somewhat in the direction of its line of orifices to produce some merging of the inner zone of coarser filaments with the other zone. At least one of the zones may contain fusible fibres, e.g. sheath-core fibres which can be fused on heating to provide autogeneous bonding. The web may be calendered or slit.
