Abstract

1497866 Rotary drum filters WATER POLLUTION CONTROL CORP 27 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 55930/74 Heading B1D In a method of microscreening a suspension to be screened is fed to the interior of a rotary drum so that a pool of suspension and a gas space thereabove are formed inside the drum, separated solids are removed from the drum's inner surface at a point above the pool by a back-flushing liquid spray into a collecting means within the drum and a positive pressure differential is maintained between the gas space and the space outside the drum during at least part of the method by applying positive pressure to the gasspace or suction to the space outside the drum. The pressure of the backflushing spray and the pressure differential may be varied during the process. In Fig. 11 drum 153 is rotating in filtrate-receiving tank 141 and receiving liquid from box 152, separated solids being removed from the drum by liquid spray from nozzles 165 into trough 157. The blower 190 is operating all the time. When the level of pool 154 is below the uppermost point of inlet 151 the. air from blower 190 is vented to atmosphere via inlet 151 and -box 152. When the level of the pool rises so that inlet 151 is filled, the air from blower 190 maintains a positive gas differential between space 173 and the space immediately outside the drum. If the liquid in box 152 rises to float 177a the pressure of the spray from nozzles 165 is increased; the spray pressure returns to its former value if the liquid in box 152 falls below float 175a. In Fig. 15 the apparatus is provided with a box 210 and trough 257a so that the pressures P 4 and P 3 may be maintained differently from pressure P 2 of the gas space. (P 4 # P 3 ). The drum may be mounted in a closed tank (e.g. Fig. 8, not shown).
