Abstract

1497560 Connector assembly AMP Inc 11 Sept 1975 37340/75 Heading H2E An electrical connector assembly 1 comprises a multiconductor cable 40, an electrical connector 8, a shroud 84 and a cover 110. Cable 40 has a plurality of conductors 42 enclosed by an insulating sheath 44 and each conductor is also individually insulated. Connector 8 (Fig. 6) has an insulating housing 10 having a body 9 and a rib 16 with two rows of terminals 6 housed in cavities 14 on either side of rib 16 and a flange 34 for mounting on a panel; each terminal 6 has a contact 20 and a conductor connecting member 4, which includes two plates 24, 26 which receive conductor 42; partitions 36 isolate terminals 6 from each other. The shroud 84 which provides strain relief, has identical halves 86, each having an internal channel (not shown) to receive plates 24, 26 and a flexible latch arm 88 and a recess 90; a shoulder (91, Fig. 4, not shown) in the recess 90 co-operates with slot 94 in arm 88 to secure the two halves together; recesses are provided on opposite edges 93 of halves 86 so that conductors 42 can pass through to terminals 6. The conductors 42 extend from terminals 6 and through an aperture between a body half and the rear face 14 of body 9 and are then bent over the grooved outer surface of body half 86, each groove 100 receiving an individual conductor 42. Latch arms 96 and ears 98 on each body half 86 clamp the central parts of the halves 86 together. The cover 110 is made of insulating material, e.g. polypropylene or polyphenylene oxide and has a top part 46 connected to a bottom part 48 by a hinge 64 (Fig. 2). The top part 146 has a panel 50, flanges 52, each flange having a recess 54 and an ear 58 in each recess and a rear flange 62. Clamping ears 60 with ribs 77 are provided on panel 50. The bottom part 48 has a panel 66, flanges 68, each having a latch arm 70 with a slot 69 and clamping ears 72, 74, 76 with ribs 77. U-shaped internal walls 80 define a passageway 82 for the connectors 42. To make a tap connection using the assembly 1, a portion of sheath 44 from cable 40 is removed to expose conductors 42 and intermediate portions of the conductors are inserted into portions 4 of terminals 6 in the connector 8; the body halves 86 are fitted at the rear of connector 8 and the conductors 42 are placed on panel 66 and positioned in aperture 82 and the shroud 84 is located between the flanges 68; the top part 46 is latched on to the bottom part 48 and bundle ties 102 (Fig. 1) are placed around the ears 60, 72, 74, 76 and secured, so that the ears are clamped round the cable sheath 44. Stress relief is provided by the cable ties, the shroud and the passageway defined by the U-shaped members 80.
