Abstract

1497436 Analyzing gases electrically PYE (ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS) Ltd 11 March 1975 10054/75 Heading G1N [Also in Division F2] Volatile organic substances in a gaseous mixture are detected by absorbing the substances in a cold filament, heating the filament to release the substances and detecting the released substances with an electron capture detector. Initially filament 9 in duct 8 is cold, pump 22 is off and valve 29 is closed. Since the pressure in valve cavity 2 and hence duct 8 is then above ambient due to the flow of inert gas e.g. from vessel 34 valve 5 is closed to seal sample gas inlet 4 and ball 17 is lifted off its seat to allow the argon to escape from duct 8 via chamber 16 and tube 20 through leakage paths in pump 22. At the same time argon from vessel 34 also flows through restrictor 33, passageways 27, 25, chamber 14 in which is situated electron capture device 23 and into duct 8 where it joins the primary argon stream. Pump 22 is then switched on so that valve 17 is opened and the pressure in duct 8 and cavity fall below atmospheric. Valve 5 lifts off and a sample of gas is drawn in through probe 3 along duct 8 and exhausted via pump 22, any organic volatile substances being absorbed by the filament 9. The argon flow through passageway 13 prevents any of the sample and substances not adsorbed on filament 9 entering chamber 14. When a sufficient sample has been drawn through the apparatus pump 22 is switched off, ball 17 closes passage 15 due to spring 18 and valve 5 closes due to the rise in pressure in duct 8 and cavity 2 caused by the continuing flow of argon. After a time sufficient for the argon flow to sweep any remaining traces of sample air from the duct 8 solenoid 31 is energized to open valve 29. There is now a direct passage to atmosphere via passageway 13, cavity 14, passageway 25 and tube 28 and filament 9 is heated so that any adsorbed volatile organic substance is driven off and is carried by the primary argon flow through the passageway 13 into chamber 14 to reach electron capture detector.
