Abstract

1497275 Collapsible steering columns IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 22 Aug 1975 [3 June 1974] 24503/74 Heading B7H A vehicle steering column 1 has a joint 2 such as a universal joint at its lower end about which it can bend, and first and second members at 8 which are connected respectively to the steering column and to a fascia, dashboard or bulkhead 7 of the vehicle and interconnected by energy absorbing means, so that on application of an impact load to steering wheel 5 the column 1 is movable towards the bulkhead by bending about the joint 2 to move the first member towards the second member and thus operate the energy absorbing means. As shown, the energy assembly 8 is a piston-and-cylinder device in which an annular slug of plastics material may be extruded by the piston. A second such energy absorbing assembly (9), Fig. 2 (not shown), is also connected between the column and a position on the bulkhead 7 spaced from the assembly 8, and further such assemblies may be provided. Steering wheel 5 is pivotally mounted on the column 1 for movement to position 10 in an impact, the column 1 being upright or at an angle of more than 60 degrees to the horizontal.
