Abstract

1,120,799. Collapsible steering columns. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 3 Feb., 1967, No. 5277/67. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] A collapsible steering column 1 is connected to a deformable element 11, which passes round a member 13, and which on collapsing of the column, is pulled round the member 13 thereby being deformed and absorbing energy to retard the collapsing of the column. In Fig. 1 the two column parts la, 1b are clamped together by a clamp including a bolt (3) (Fig. 5, not shown) which engages a flat 4 on the part 1b and slides when a predetermined axial load on the steering wheel is exceeded. The elements 11, 12, which may be flat, ribbed, of varying cross-section or cylindrical, are secured at their ends 11a, 11b to a vehicle body and at their ends 11b, 12b are secured to the steering column part 1a and pass round rollers mounted between plates 15, 16 which move towards the ends 11a, 12a as the column collapses. The upper part 1a of the column is supported by a support member 8 comprising a folded metal sheet with the folds 8a, 8b, 8c spot-welded together. On collapse of the column the spot-welds fracture as the member unfolds. In modifications the column parts 1a, 1b are interconnected by a shear pin and/or the ends 11a, 12a of the elements are free and the rollers 13, 14 are mounted on either the bulkhead of a vehicle or on the upper part of the column.
