Abstract

1497179 Trailer overrun brakes; automatic control DAIMLER-BENZ AG 26 Nov 1975 [20 Dec 1974] 48644/75 Headings F2F and F2E To control the braking forces on the wheels of a trailer for eliminating forces occurring in the coupling 2, (3) between a towing vehicle and the trailer (i.e. for eliminating overrun), a static force reference value and at least one dynamic force value of the forces occurring in the coupling 3 are measured electrically and combined to form an electrical control signal which regulates the trailer breaking forces. As particularly described, the static force reference value is the "overrun path" of the trailer, that is the distance by which the connection from the trailer axle to the trailer coupling varies when the trailer runs into the towing vehicle, a first said dynamic force value is overrun speed and a second (optional) said dynamic force value is overrun acceleration. In the illustrated embodiment a potentiometer 6 mechanically connected to a towbar 2 provides a signal proportional to the overrun path which signal is fed via a changeover switch 25 to a matching amplifier 26 at the output of which an electrical signal proportional to the overrun path appears, and to a differentiating element 28 at the output of which an electrical signal proportional to overrun speed appears, which signal passes to another differentiating element 30 at whose output appears an electrical signal proportional to overrun acceleration. The three signals are applied to a summing amplifier 32 via respective multiplier elements 27, 29, 31, and thence to a comparator 33 and via a power amplifier 35 and a diode 40 to an electric trailer brake 38. The power amplifier 35 is connected to a current source only when a switch 36 is closed by operation of a brake pedal B. When reverse gear is engaged or the reversing lamp is switched on the switch 25 is switched over, the input magnitudes are reversed in polarity and may be differently weighted, and the voltage from potentiometer 6 now passes by way of an inverter amplifier 41. A voltage source 13 is provided on the trailer which acts on the trailer brake 38 if the trailer breaks away to close a switch 39.
