Abstract

1497120 Measuring liquid level electrically B J HIGGINS 26 March 1975 [29 March 1974] 12613/75 Heading G1N An elongated multi-electrode liquid level probe for use in a tank or well comprises a plurality of metal collar sections 2A, 2B separated by insulating sections 1A, 1B which screw into the collars 2A, 2B. A plug 7 threaded to the lower end of section 2B seals the interior of the probe. Leads connected to the terminals 4 attached by lugs 3 to the collars extend upwards through the probe to the exterior and after the probe has been filled with insulating material such as sand the top is sealed by epoxy resin. The probe is mounted vertically in e.g. a sewage tank and as the level rises to bridge the collars signals are produced due to the lowering of the resistance between the collars and the lowest collar 2B. Thus when the level falls to 2B a pump is stopped and the level is allowed to rise to the collar at a second level which when reached causes a signal to be passed to the pump to start it and pump the level back to 2B. If the pump fails and the level rises to the collar at a third level a standby pump is activated and the level cycles between this level and level 2B. If on failure of this pump the level reaches a further collar at a fourth level an alarm is activated. In order to protect the probe from solids in the liquid a pipe may be positioned around the probe which may be provided with a filter across the bottom and/or small holes in the pipe.
