Abstract

1496667 Coated calcium hypochlorite granules OLIN CORP 17 Dec 1974 54445/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division Dl) Calcium hypochlorite granules having a smooth rounded surface comprise a core of calcium hypochlorite surrounded by a plurality of layers of an inorganic salt. The calcium hypochlorite granule may comprise a core of calcium hypochlorite having a diameter of from 200 to 2000 microns encapsulated with a plurality of layers of calcium hypochlorite the outer diameter of the layered particle being 400 to 5000 microns. These granules may be further coated with other inorganic salts. Inorganic salts mentioned are hydrated salts which are molten at temperatures below about 150‹ C. and solid at room temperature, e.g. hydrated aluminium sulphate with from 12 to 18 moles of water of hydration or hydrated magnesium sulphate with from 4 to 7 moles of water of hydration, and the chlorides, chlorates, nitrates, carbonates, silicates, phosphates, tetraborates, metaborates, sulphates, pyrophosphates, tripolyphosphates, hexametaphosphates and tetraphosphates of alkali metals. The calcium hypochlorite granules consisting of a core of calcium hypochlorite and a plurality of layers of the hypochlorite are less prone to dusting and fragmentation than conventional irregularly shaped products; coating with another inorganic salt improves the chemical and thermal stability of calcium hypochlorite particles. In Example 12 a calcium hypochlorite granule coated with layers of calcium hypochlorite is further coated with "Calnox" (Registered Trade Mark), a polyacrylic acid.
