Abstract

1496414 Rheometer CIBA-GEIGY AG 5 Feb 1976 [5 March 1975] 9062/75 Heading G1S A rheometer comprises a tube 1 having a constriction 2 providing a passage 3 symmetrical about a transverse plane through its midpoint, pistons 4, 4' each side of the constriction, each piston having an air vent 6, 6', means for applying to either piston the load necessary to extrude a sample at a predetermined rate through the constriction, and means for measuring the applied load. To investigate the thixotropic properties of a material placed above the constriction 2, tube 1 is stood on a load cell 8, piston 4 is moved into contact with the material or the air above the material is vented at 6, a crosshead 9 is moved downwardly until rod 10 engages piston 4 and seals vent 6, crosshead 9 is then moved down at a constant predetermined rate while the force applied is measured by load cell 8, and the tube 1 is then inverted and the procedure repeated to extrude the material back through the constriction by applying force to piston 4'. The decrease in the force required to extrude the material at the predetermined rate is a measure of the thixotropy of the material. The constriction may be a plug held by screw threads 14 and having a driving formation (15, 15') at one end, Fig. 2 (not shown), a plug held in position by a transverse locking screw (26) Fig. 8 (not shown) or a plug having a middle flange (37) held between two halves of the tube 1 engaging by screw threads, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), each plug having one or more passages 3 therein. Each piston may be provided with a recess (24) for engaging the prongs on an extraction tool, Figs. 4-7 (not shown).
