Abstract

149,617. Thomson, G. C. Aug. 7, 1919, [Convention date]. Bottles, washing.-Comprises a machine in which the bottles are continuously carried by a sinuous horizontally - arranged chain - conveyer through various compartments in order that they may be subjected successively to draining, cleansing, sterilizing and drying operations with intermediate draining, drying by air blasts, and tempering. As shown in Fig. 1, the bottles are loaded on at (1) and pass through a channel 4 in which residual liquid in the bottles is drained away, and through spring doors 8 into an ante-chamber V<1> in which they are gradually warmed by steam and moist air passing through perforated walls, and preliminarily rinsed by hot water sprays delivered through sprocket wheels 10, 10<a>. In the chamber V the bottles are sprayed inside and out with hot water delivered from a lower tank (not shown) by a pump 13 through a regulating valve 27, and pipes 28, 29, 30, and pass on through a tunnel 107, 107a, in which air blown from a pump 15 frees the bottles of dirty liquid. The bottles, which are still warm, then enter a sterilizing chamber W in which they are subjected to sprays of hot caustic solution through similar pipes as described above and pass through a tunnel 111 to a cooling compartment X open to the atmosphere, the cooling of the bottles and removal of caustic solution being assisted by air blast from the pump 15. Passing on through spring doors into a compartment Y the bottles receive a preliminary cold spraying with water from a sprocket wheel 147 and enter a chamber Z for final rinsing with fresh water from. a main (not shown). The conveyer then carries the bottles through drying compartments 123 built on the sides of the chambers V and W. In order to assist the cleansing by an admixture of air to the sprayer, water air inlet pipes are fitted to the delivery side of the pump 13. Specifications 159,821, 159,826 and 159,827 are referred to.
