Abstract

1496166 Animal foodstuff compositions containing iodonium salts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Oct 1975 [30 Oct 1974 5 May 1975] 46967/74 and 18713/75 Heading A5B Non-ruminant meat-producing animals are treated to improve their growth and food utilising efficiency and to reduce the incidence of scouring, by orally administering an iodonium salt of formula R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>I<SP>+</SP>X<SP>-</SP> wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> which may be the same or different, are each a phenyl, naphthyl or thienyl radical optionally bearing one or more substituents selected from nitro, hydroxy, carboxy, halogen, C 1-6 alkyl, C 1-6 alkoxy, C 1-6 alkanoylamino, C 3-7 cycloalkyl, and phenyliodonio and thienyliodonio radicals optionally bearing one or more of the aforesaid substituents, and X<SP>-</SP> is a physiologically acceptable anion. The compounds may be administered in the animal's food or drinking water, in the food a suitable concentration being 0.0001% to 0.025% by weight. Pre-mix concentrates containing 0.025% to 50% by weight of the iodonium salt with a foodstuff or inert solid diluent may be suitably diluted with animal feed to provide an administrable composition. The food compositions may also contain nitrovin (1, 5 bis (5-nitro-2-furyl)-1, 4-pentadien-3-one amidinohydrazone) as a growthpromoting agent, and also added vitamins, minerals (e.g. copper), lysine and methionine. The animals treated are pigs, poultry, and lambs and milk-fed calves (which do not have a functioning rumen). The invention includes animal foodstuff compositions comprising the aforesaid iodonium salt and a standard poultry or pig diet.
