Abstract
1496011 Defoaming composition DOW CORNING CORP 4 Feb 1975 [22 Nov 1974] 4695/75 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] A composition suitable for use in an oil-base defoamer consists essentially of (1) from 55-96% wt of a siloxane of the unit formula in which x is of such a value that there is from 10-35% wt. of methoxy groups based on the weight of (1); (2) from 2-25% wt. of a hydrocarbon-solvent soluble copolymer of units and SiO 2 units in a mole ratio of from 0À5:1 to 1À2:1; and (3) from 2-25% wt. of a silicon-bonded hydroxyl terminated methylpolysiloxane fluid containing a major proportion of dimethylsiloxane units, the proportions of (1), (2) and (3) being based on the combined weights of (1), (2) and (3). The above composition can be used in a defoaming composition for aqueous systems by mixing (A) 100 p.b.w. of a mineral oil, (B) 3-20 p.b.w. of the above siloxane composition and (C) a condensation catalyst for (B) and then heating the mixture at a temperature of at least 50‹ C. The mineral oils are the hydrocarbon oils derived from carbonaceous sources such as petroleum, shale and coal. Optional additives to the defoamer composition are thickening agents, e.g. hydrogenated castor oil; inert fillers, e.g. aluminium oxide, silica and clays; spreading agents such as higher fatty acids or anionic, cationic or non-ionic surfactants. Suitable catalysts are amines, amine salts, ammonia, ammonium compounds, metal salts of carboxylic acids and esters of titanium and zirconium. In the examples defoamer compositions are prepared from a mineral oil, ammonium carbonate as catalyst, hydrogenated castor oil as thickener, a tall oil fatty acid wetting agent and varying amounts of (1) an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent solution of a methoxylated monomethylsiloxane containing 12% wt. of methoxy groups, a toluene solution of a copolymer of units in a mole ratio of 0À6, and an hydroxylterminated dimethylpolysiloxane fluid. The compositions are used to defoam black liquor in a pump test.
