Abstract

1495989 Automatic application of brakes CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 25 Nov 1975 [9 April 1975] 48420/75 Heading F2F A brake control system for automatically applying the brakes of a heavy duty earth working vehicle when shifting between forward and reverse drive has a speed responsive control so that the brakes are only applied if the direction of drive is reversed above a predetermined speed. The vehicle has a transmission with hydraulically-operated forward and reverse clutches and hydraulically controlled brakes, and the system comprises an hydraulic pump 10, a forward-and-reverse selector valve 28, a pressure-responsive brake control mechanism responsive to fluid pressure for controlling braking, a pressure-controlling valve mechanism 31 responsive to a first pressure signal, generated on shifting valve 28, for controlling the flow of fluid from the source to the pressure-responsive brake control mechanism and a second valve mechanism 30, responsive to a second pressure signal related to a predetermined minimum output from the transmission, i.e. related to vehicle speed, for conducting the first signal to the pressure controlling valve mechanism. A direction sensing means 27 includes an annular container 26 mounted on the output shaft of the transmission and fluid therein impacts against the openings of respective pitot tubes 33, 34 depending on direction of rotation to build a pressure which acts as a control pressure on valve 30, the latter only acting if there is sufficient pressure from the transmission; that is, since the pressure is related to speed, if the vehicle is moving faster than a predetermined speed. When the valve spool 75 of valve 30 is biased to the left by a spring 82, pressurized fluid in line 76 is dumped to reservoir 11 but when the spool is moved to the right by pressure fluid in line 37 the fluid is communicated to the area 101 of valve 31 causing the spool 89 of the valve 31 to move to the left cutting off communication between the hydraulic lines 93 and 94. This allows the spring-biased brakes to operate. In a modification there is no speedsensing control and valve 30 receives a signal from the transmission control. In another modification an electrical generator is connected to the output of the transmission and provides a signal related to speed which controls the supply of fluid to valve 30 by means of a solenoid-operated valve.
