Abstract

In a hydrostatic transmission for driving front wheels 16 and 18 (e.g. on a grader) through respective motors 64 and 66 under the control of clutches 72 and 74 which are only engaged by pressure transmitted via valves 120, 132 when adequate pressure exists on the feed side of the respective motors, with the result that the wheels can overrun the motors, the motors are in parallel in a closed hydraulic circuit 90, 92, 94 including a variable displacement swash-plate pump 84 driven from the main engine of the vehicle, and an electrical control unit 152 responds to sensors 60 and 82 sensing rear wheel speed and the rotor speed of one of the motors 64 and 66, and to signals from switches 180 and 182 signalling selection by a forward/reverse lever of forward and reverse drive respectively, to provide a control signal to a pilot valve 102. This valve controls swash-plate actuators 98 and 100 so as (a) to make the pump 84 in the sense required for forward and reverse drive respectively, and (b) to make the pump displacement such that the front wheel motors drive at 97% or 971 DIVIDED 2% of the drive speed to the rear wheels. Since the front wheels can overrun their motors, the front drive does not act until the rear wheels experience 3% or 21 DIVIDED 2% slip.
